BATTERY CONSTRUCTION
The basics of lead acid battery construction has remained constant for many years - Lead Plates (Electrodes), Electrolyte (Sulphuric Acid) and Separators all placed in a case.
Where the largest changes have been over the past 20 years has been in the plate construction for starter batteries moving from gravity casting to strip and continuous casting with expanded and punched plates. This has lead to a much tighter grid structure, which creates considerable increased corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity.
Along with this the composition of the lead has been tweaked and altered leading to batteries with better charge retention and acceptance.
Now the movement to AGM Batteries and EFB Batteries is a common place for modern vehicles.
With the rapid increase in emissions regulations across many countries Stop Start, Mild Hybrid and Electric Vehicles are becoming a common place on roads. These vehicles need slightly different requirements from the ubiquitous 12V Battery. Therefore advancement to EFB (Enhanced Flooded Batteries ) and AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) is well underway with the aftermarket seeing a rapidly increasing number of these appearing in garages and workshops for replacement
